Absorption vs. adsorption in nitrogen generation

Definitions

Absorption is the process by which a substance enters and becomes distributed throughout the bulk of another material. Adsorption is the process in which atoms, ions, or molecules accumulate on the surface of another material, called the adsorbent. In absorption, the substance penetrates into the interior of the absorbent, whereas in adsorption it remains on the surface. Adsorbed substances can often be removed from the surface, while absorbed substances are incorporated within the bulk material and may require additional processes for separation.

When both absorption and adsorption occur simultaneously, the overall process is called sorption.

Adsorption Vs Absorption(a) - Absorption vs. (b) - Adsorption

Absorption vs. Adsorption Comparison

* Absorption Adsorption
Absorbent/Adsorbent Bulk Surface
Heat Exchange Endothermic Exothermic
Temperature Not impacted by temperature Favors low temperature
Rate of Reaction Uniform rate Increases until it reaches equilibrium
Concentration The same throughout the material Concentration on the surface is different than the bulk
Attaining Equilibrium Comparatively slower Comparatively faster

Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) Technology

PEAK Gas Generation's i-Flow Nitrogen Generator uses Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) technology, an advanced gas separation process that relies on adsorption rather than absorption. While absorption involves one substance being dissolved or taken into the bulk of another material, adsorption is a surface-based process in which gas molecules adhere to the surface of a solid adsorbent.

In a PSA nitrogen generation system, compressed and purified air is directed into specialised adsorption vessels containing Carbon Molecular Sieve (CMS) material. The CMS selectively adsorbs oxygen, carbon dioxide, moisture, and trace impurities from the compressed air. Nitrogen molecules, which are less readily adsorbed, pass through the sieve bed and are collected for use in the application.

The process operates in alternating cycles of pressurisation and depressurisation. During the adsorption phase, oxygen and other gases are captured on the CMS surface. When the vessel reaches capacity, the pressure is reduced, releasing the adsorbed gases and regenerating the CMS for the next cycle. This continuous pressure-swing operation enables a reliable, on-demand supply of high-purity nitrogen without the need for delivered cylinders or bulk liquid nitrogen.

The Benefits of PSA Technology

PSA technology offers a number of advantages over traditional nitrogen supply methods. A single i-Flow generator can produce more than 4,000 litres per minute (7,212 SCFH) of clean, dry nitrogen, with purity levels ranging from 95% to 99.9995%, enabling users to tailor nitrogen supply exactly to their specific requirements.

One of the key benefits of the i-Flow platform is its scalability. As nitrogen demand increases, additional PSA columns can be integrated into the existing system, allowing production capacity to grow without requiring a complete system replacement. This modular approach provides long-term flexibility and helps future-proof operations against changing production needs.

Generating nitrogen on-site also eliminates many of the logistical challenges associated with gas cylinders and bulk deliveries. Businesses can reduce supply chain dependency, minimise operational downtime, and gain greater control over their gas supply. The result is improved manufacturing efficiency, lower operating costs, and enhanced process consistency.

From a sustainability perspective, PSA nitrogen generation can significantly reduce the environmental impact associated with transportation, cylinder handling, and storage. By producing nitrogen only when and where it's needed, organizations can lower their carbon footprint while supporting key environmental and operational goals.

For manufacturers seeking a reliable, efficient, and sustainable nitrogen supply solution, PSA technology provides a proven approach that combines high performance with long-term economic benefits.
